Nepali and abroad, as Naya Shakti Party Nepal has said in its tweet “Aba prabas ma raheko nepali ko note matra haina, vote pani chalcha’ (Now Nepalis abroad will not only contribute money to Nepal but also contribute their vote). The issue of voting rights to Nepalis abroad has been ongoing for a while now, Non-Residents Nepalese Association (NRNA) has been actively lobbying the government towards making provisions for Nepalis abroad to vote.
An approximate 40 lakh Nepalis are living abroad – a majority in Malaysia and the Gulf countries. Their contributions is the most significant contribution towards our foreign income, overtaking exports by a huge margin. Activists seeking voting rights for migrant workers and Nepalis abroad said the government of Nepal is ousting these individuals.
No more however, the Supreme Court has issued a directive ordering the government to draft a law which shall enable Nepalis abroad to vote.
