With a draw against Myanmar yesterday, Nepalese Women’s national team have placed themselves at a strong position to enter the second round of qualifying matches for the 2020 Olympics to be held in Tokyo, Japan.
The Nepalese team and 24 (of 47 AFC member nations) nations are competing for two available spots in the Olympics. Nepal was placed in Group C along with India, Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Nepal drew (1-1) against India on 8th November, 2018. Nepal’s captain Niru Thapa scored the first goal in the 11th minute. India’s Kamala Devi drew the score in the 37th minute.
Nepal’s second match was against Myanmar on 11th November, 2018. Nepal was awarded a penalty in the 3rd minute which was converted into a goal by Sabitra Bhandari. A goal in the 14th minute by Khin Moe Wai tied the score.
All matches of Group C are being played in Myanmar. Nepal will play against Bangladesh on 13th November, 2018.
Ten teams (top 2 of the 4 pools & and two third position teams with the highest points) will proceed to the second round of the qualifiers. Vietnam and Uzbekistan did not have to play in the first round, and will join in the second round.
In the second round, the teams will be divided into 4 pools of three teams each. The winner of each pool will qualify to enter round 3, wherein, Australia, China, North Korea, South Korea, and Thailand will join in. The five joining nations plus winners of round 2 will be divided into two pools of four teams each. The winners of each pool qualify for the Olympics.
Japan, being the host nation automatically qualifies for the games.
