Rashida Tlaib refers to Trump as a ‘motherfucker’

Editorial: A video of newly elected Democrat congresswoman calling for Trump’s impeachment and referring to the sitting President as a ‘motherfucker’ is going viral – and has sparked some serious debate about ‘her choice of language’.

“When your son looks at you and says, ‘Momma look, you won, bullies don’t win,’ and I said ‘Baby they don’t,’ because we’re going to go in there and we’re gonna impeach the motherfucker,” – these are the exact words from the Michigan elect representative to the U.S. Congress.

However, interestingly, she has not received the wrath someone else like for example, President Trump would receive, at least not by the mainstream media. Social media, otherwise is ablaze – Trump supporters claiming ‘imagine what the media would have done if Trump had called someone a motherfucker’, and those in support of Tlaib saying Trump himself (with his past racial undertones) has justified the use of such language.

We don’t know what to say, perhaps the death of ‘correctness’ has arrived. To an extent, the fury of Tlaib could be understood, she is an American of Palestinian origin, and Trump administration’s support to Israel in the Israel-Palestine conflict has been dismaying a lot of Palestinians worldwide, including her. She could be further empowered by the recent turning of the lower house of U.S. Congress, but that does not justify the ‘foulness’.

Keeping their hatred for the President aside, the media ought to have called out on Tlaib, and said her comments were not justified. And in their silence, they have paved way for President Trump himself to call someone else a ‘motherfucker’, someday if he chooses to throw all ‘political correctness’ out of the window. However, him saying so will have larger implications. Keeping the media biasness aside, the President holds a much powerful (and responsible) position than a congresswoman.

If Tlaib were the President, perhaps the scorn of the media would have been higher, and if Trump simply a congressman, the media wouldn’t have cared ‘as much’ if he called the sitting President a ‘motherfucker’.

However, beyond justification, the more important reason for this article to be written is ‘the ongoing political rift’ in the U.S. (and the world) and the deep social divide it creates. President Tlaib’s comments, just as most of President Trump’s politics promotes ‘hatred’. When Trump says we need a wall because criminals are flowing from the southern border, we start hating the awaiting migrants. And yes, agreed, a few of the migrants do incite violence in the community, we tend to overlook the migrants that contribute to making America great – I am sure, if we are to do a story on them, we could find plenty of migrants who jumped the wall and have made their lives, and perhaps a lot of American lives better. Similarly, when Tlaib refers to Trump as a motherfucker, we start to hate him. No we do not want to hate him, we can ‘dislike’ him, we can be his ‘critics’, but we should not hate him.

Here I am, being politically correct when expressing my opinions, and it does not cost me much. No, we do not need to be a ‘leftist, or a rightist’ to be politically correct – we simply need to be humans – we are blessed with a conscience after all.

And now, if America, the world’s pinnacle of democracy is going to depart from ‘correctness’ in their speech, then the world probably is going to follow suit.
