Nepal Airlines has said they will be operating direct flights from Tribhuvan Imternational Airport, Kathmandu to Kansai International Airport, Osaka from March end. This will be first time Nepal will be flying direct to Japan. Earlier, from 1994 to 2007, Nepal Airlines would fly to Osaka via Shanghai, China.
According to the airlines, Nepal is awaiting clearance from the Japanese Civil Aviation agency – they will conduct a safety check before granting landing rights to Nepal. The safety check will be conducted in adherence to the standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation. Nepal Airlines has said they will begin flights to Osaka as soon as the permits are received, which is expected around March end.
Nepal and Japan revised their ASA (air service agreement) in June. 2019, paving the way for both countries to operate direct flights to each other. Initially, Nepal Airlines was supposed to begin direct flights to Japan from November, 2018, however inevitable delays led to a postponement in the service.
With the Visit Nepal 202o tourism campaign drawing near, the direct flight would help thousands of Japanese tourists arrive in Nepal in comfort. The airlines is also looking to capitalise upon the increasing amount of students travelling to Japan in pursuit of higher education every year.
