Police disrupt government doctors’ protest: 25 arrested, 3 injured

25 doctors were arrested and three injured after police disrupted a sit-in protest organized by agitating government doctors at the Ministry of Health and Population on Sunday. The doctors were staging the protest peacefully against the government for not implementing the agreement signed between a team from Ministry of Health and Population and the Government Doctors’ Association of Nepal (GODAN) on Jan 13.

As the government works towards adjusting all civil service workers as per the Civil Service Adjustment Ordinance, GODAN has demanded impunity from it. The GODAN has put forward 14 demands – objection to Civil Service Adjustment, appointment of health secretary, appointment of Vice Chancellor at Bir Hospital, to name a few.

The GODAN had also previously launched a sit-in protest last December and January staying adamant not to fill the adjustment forms in accordance with Civil Service Adjustment Ordinance throughout the nation.

The government had agreed to address their demands in the past, however failed to honor them.

The arrested doctors were kept in Nepal Police club and released at 5 pm.  They were arrested at 1 pm.
