The 5th South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) women’s football tournament is going to be held in Biratnagar from tomorrow – for the first time outside the valley.
National Women’s teams from 6 countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Sri Lanka and host Nepal) are taking part in the tournament. Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh are placed in group A while India, Sri Lanka, Maldives are grouped in group B.
The inaugural match of the tournament between Nepal and Bhutan will be played at Sahid Stadium. The tournament will run until March 22.
Initially, the game was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka from 17 to 26 December 2018, but after Sri Lanka withdrew from hosting the game, it was rescheduled to be hosted in Nepal.
Nepal has appeared in all the games since its establishment. Pakistan withdrew from participating in 2019.
The game is held every two years. India is the defending champion of 2016 SAFF women’s football tournament.
