Agencies concerned under the Ministry of Health and Population have decided to start a ‘search and destroy campaign’ in Dharan Sub Metropolitan City-15 in order to contain a dengue epidemic following a rise in number of patients in the area.
The Epidemiology and Disease Control Division under the Department of Health Services are going to conduct the search and destroy campaign in conjunction with Nepal Army, Armed Police Force and Nepal Police.
According to the Division, female community health volunteers serving in the affected municipality, members of local women group, members of local clubs, representatives of non-governmental organisations, civil society members, teachers of schools and health workers from BP Koirala Institute of Health Sciences will participate in the campaign today.
According to Dr Bikash Shah, assistant director at BPKIHS, Dharan, the number of victims with dengue symptoms has crossed 173 since May 14.
Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquito, which are active during the day, are mainly responsible for transmitting the virus by breeding in clean water, according to WHO.
Generally, the symptoms of the disease are mild to high fever, severe muscle pain, rashes in the muscles, severe headache, and pain in eyes.
