At least 12 people were killed and 4 people wounded in a shooting at a Virginia Beach Municipal Office on Friday after a disgruntled man armed with pistols and a rifle shot at employees immediately and indiscriminately after getting in the building using an employee pass. The shooter was also killed in the act by the police.
The gunman who was a city engineer and co-worker of the victims was identified as DeWayne Craddock by Police. According to Virginia Beach Police Chief James Cervera, Craddock had worked for the city’s public utilities department for 15 years.
11 of the total victims were accounted for as the city’s employees while one was a contractor. Their bodies were found in all three floors of the Virginia Beach building and in a car parked outside, said authorities.
An official who was injured in the shooting, was saved because of the bullet proof jacket he was wearing, said Police authorities. He has already been treated and released.
The gunman had used two .45 caliber pistols to shoot the people. Police arrived at the scene within minutes after the attack began.
The victims at the Virginia Beach Municipal office had been employed for 11 month to 41 year. Six worked in the public utilities department and five were deployed in the public work department.
This is the worst mass shooting in the US since November 2018, wherein twelve people were killed at a Los Angeles-area bar and grill by a gunman who later killed himself
