Twenty Nine passengers traveling in One Sleeper Couch passenger bus in Uttar Pradesh lost their lives on Monday morning when the bus skidded off the six lane Yamuna Expressway near the Delhi road. It fell 50 feet into the side drain. At least seventeen people were injured in the accident.
The bus was travelling to New Delhi from Lucknow on the 165 km Expressway – it connects Noida with Agra in Uttar Pradesh.
According to Indian Police, the driver might have dozed off while driving, hence skidded off the road. The bus was carrying a total of 46 people. The injured are being treated at nearby hospitals.
The Uttar Pradesh Roadway has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs (Indian currency) to the families of those who died in the accident. The Uttar Pradesh government, last week, made a provision of paying a fine for speeding if they covered the 302 km-stretch from the Lucknow toll plaza to Agra in less than three hours.
