The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) won the Women’s World Cup beating Netherlands in a tough match yesterday in France. This is their 4th World Cup Title (1991, 1999, 2015, 2019). The win was important for them – it was necessary. Their own president had challenged them to ‘Win First’.
Why did their own President challenge them to ‘win’?
Trump does not take ‘personal criticism’ very well, so when a journalist asked Megan Rapinoe (co-captain of USWNT) if she would visit the White House after the World Cup, she replied ‘No fucking way will we be invited to the White House. [Trump] tries to avoid inviting a team that might decline.” In a fair world, the first criticism would come out towards the journalist for politicizing the interview – but hey, as much as you want to call the main-stream media leftists, they (including us) are in it for the money (too) – and money for news outlets comes after such controversies. Megan too should be criticized, she used the word ‘fuck’ liberally, nevertheless she has a point, and she hasn’t missed a turn when she wants to make her political point heard – and she was right when she said ‘the team probably won’t even be invited’.
Naturally, this comment did not sit well with the President – so he shot back a tweet “Women’s soccer player, @mPinoe, just stated that she is “not going to the F…ing White House if we win.” I am a big fan of the American Team, and Women’s Soccer, but Megan should WIN first before she TALKS! Finish the job! We haven’t yet invited Megan or the team, but I am now inviting the TEAM, win or lose. Megan should never disrespect our Country, the White House, or our Flag, especially since so much has been done for her & the team. Be proud of the Flag that you wear. The USA is doing GREAT!”
Many Trump followers believed his comments – they immediately criticized ‘Megan Rapinoe’ for disrespecting the flag and the country – because she criticized who sits in the White House. Many media outlets, vocal critics of President Trump, came to praise Megan Rapinoe, but none said this: “That criticizing the president is not disrespecting the nation, or the flag’. At Aawaaj, we criticise our Prime Minister all the time. We criticise him because we love our country”. It was the same with Megan, she, and the whole team adorns that flag proudly – last night’s game was proof enough. So when she, representing the country on an influential platform as such says ‘she believes she is not going to be invited to White House’ should have been a point of thought generating concern rather than a political debate. Similarly, when she knelt down in solidarity with Kaepernick, and when the team demanded an ‘equal pay’ – she is making points where the nation can #BeBetter.
Therefore, someone needs to tell President Trump and the masses that ‘disagreeing with the President is not disrespecting the national flag – in fact it is one of the fundamental values of democracy.
